TIDE

| By LYNN NEW | ||||||||||
The backbone of Time and Tide is poetic verse, authenticated by historical fact and highlighted with paragraphs of detailed text as further explanation of the subject. The book is lavishly illustrated in pen and ink in the style of the etchings, prints and photographs they have been inspired by. Although based around the area of the Spithead Anchorage, which includes Isle of Wight waters, Lynn's latest book encompasses poems expressing the closeness of our maritime roots and the Dockyard heritage of our nation. |

The
Leaving Tide

The dawn
turned from its rosy light Into a day anew; With every inch of rising tide A great excitement grew. Matelots and their officers, Whores of ample size; Children and their kinsfolk Said their fond goodbyes. Now the vessels lifted gently, At their moorings tried to pull. On shore the mood was quickening; The tide was rising full. Midst the smell of thronging people, Perfume and rough spilt ale Came the order and the urgency, The fleet was set to sail. The boats pulled from the harbour, While the landlord supped his beer, For the fleet and its departure Took his custom for a year. Said the old salt to the nipper Who was keen to go to sea, 'Listen and respect her son; She'll make a man of thee!' |
